Community-Based Entrepreneurship & Food Security: Regenerating Local Economies from the Ground Up
The Community-Based Entrepreneurship & Food Security programme is a grassroots model designed to tackle food insecurity while creating income opportunities in underserved areas. By activating Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres and local agents as micro-distributors, we create a distribution network for affordable, locally produced food products.
This initiative empowers caregivers, educators, and youth to become part of a multilevel marketing and sales network rooted in their own communities. With over 2,500 ECD centres targeted across the Eastern Cape, the potential for impact is vast.
Through regenerative food gardens and rural aggregation hubs, FBSA is strengthening household nutrition and enabling the creation of sustainable micro-enterprises. This initiative also supports broader development objectives such as the Provincial Government Procurement of Agricultural Products (GPAP) policy and global frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and AfCFTA.
By fusing local food production with community-based sales, the programme improves access to nutritious food, boosts rural employment, and supports a decentralised, people-powered approach to food security.
